Coronavirus latest: Germany hits record daily cases as it tightens restrictions in hotspots

Wisconsin reported its third-biggest one-day jump in new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, just hours after a state judge temporarily blocked an order from the governor’s administration limiting the number of people in bars or attending indoor gatherings in an effort to curb the continued spread of coronavirus in the state.

California’s daily coronavirus death toll bounced on Wednesday, back from some of its lowest levels since the start of the pandemic, but remained in line with the average level of the past week. A further 59 deaths were attributed to coronavirus, authorities revealed this afternoon, up from nine yesterday and compared with 51 a week ago.

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a 9pm-6am curfew for Paris and eight other big cities from Saturday in an attempt to curb the rise of coronavirus infections that threaten to overwhelm the country’s hospitals. “Our intensive care wards are under unsustainable pressure,” Mr Macron said.

Italy has surpassed its daily record for newly diagnosed coronavirus cases, data from the country’s ministry of health showed on Wednesday. The number of newly diagnosed daily cases rose to 7,332 on Wednesday, up from 5,901 yesterday and surpassing the highest levels seen at the start of the pandemic.

Florida reported about 2,800 new cases for the second day running on Wednesday and saw its positivity rate climb to among its highest levels in at least a fortnight. A further 2,833 positive tests were reported over the past 24 hours, up from 2,725 on Tuesday.

Wales said it would ban people from areas of the UK with high levels of coronavirus cases from entering the country from Friday after prime minister Boris Johnson refused to introduce movement restrictions.

Portugal has declared a national state of emergency and banned groups of more than five from meeting in public to combat what Prime Minister António Costa described as a serious increase in coronavirus infections.

The wholesale cost of US goods and services climbed more than expected in September, rising by the most in six months when coronavirus lockdowns first began. The producer price index rose 0.4 per cent for the 12 months ending in September, the labour department said, following a 0.2 per cent slide in August.

Wells Fargo returned to profit in the third quarter as the bank followed other US lenders in reporting a steep decline in provisions for bad loans, reflecting a stabilising economy.

Iran’s coronavirus-related daily cases and deaths rose to a record as the government imposed restrictions on travelling to and from five big cities that are most infected by the virus. The latest 24-hour death tally increased to 279 on Wednesday, up from the 254 reported on Tuesday, while 4,830 people tested positive.
