Craig Bishop of RBC Wealth Management’s portfolio advisory group, has retired and Tom Garretson will assume many of his responsibilities, the firm said.

Bishop was lead strategist of U.S. Fixed Income Strategies at RBC’s portfolio advisory group. He spent 17 years with the firm. Garretson has been named vice president and senior portfolio strategist of the portfolio advisory group.

Bishop spent more than 30 years in the financial services industry, with stints in sales (retail and institutional), trading, and marketing/portfolio analysis of all fixed-income products, becoming a specialist in taxable securities.

Hired to work in RBC’s fixed income strategies group in 2002, Bishop was elevated four years later to group director. In addition to working with financial advisors in portfolio structuring and analysis, identifying and implementing market strategies, Bishop wrote economic and fixed income market commentary for the global portfolio advisory committee’s Global Insight publication.

A graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance with a minor in economics, Bishop expects to travel more in retirement, starting with a trip to South East Asia in early 2020, with his wife, Cathy.

The couple has a son, Gus, who is also with RBC, since graduating from college in 2013 and will be starting a new job with the fixed income business development group on January 7.

“I’ve felt privileged for my seventeen years at RBC Wealth Management — U.S., most of all for the high standards, ethics and integrity we bring to work every day,” Bishop said. “I am particularly proud of our efforts in the portfolio advisory group to provide market-leading fixed income commentary and working to support the growth of the RBC Wealth Management Fixed Income Advantage, which combines access to market professionals, analytical technology, premier client service, and teamwork to build a peerless brand.”

His career at RBC came full circle. “My career finishes at RBC just as it started: surrounded with incredible opportunities — from our investment committees to recruiting and mentoring — and our great people,” he said. “In my parting comments to friends and colleagues earlier this month, I mentioned as I near retirement, I keep reminding myself of Fred Rogers’ advice: ‘Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the very beginning.’ And I couldn’t be happier to embark on that new chapter with the backing and support of the RBC family I’ve been a part of for almost two decades.”

Garretson, who earned an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of Denver, has been with RBC since 2013 and currently chairs the firm’s U.S. fixed income subcommittee and is a member of the global portfolio advisory committee and the U.S. investment committee.
